Clare
Clare was once thought to have been named after the Norman de Clare family. Before 1565, Clare was known as Thomond, which means “North Munster.” However, County Clare, An Clár translates to ‘plain’ in Irish. This name is thought to be given to Clare as a board was placed across the river Fergus to allow access to an area which became known as An Clár, or Clare.
